Rhode Island Reds are the official state bird of....you guessed it! Rhode Island. These gals lay exceptionally well, they're extremely cold hardy and lay beautiful large brown eggs.

Easter Eggers are delightful birds, and as the name implies, they lay eggs in shades of blue & green. Some chickens have puffy cheek feathers making them look comical.

Black Sex Links are a hybrid mix chicken from crossing a Barred Rock hen with a Rhode Island Red Rooster. When the chicks are hatched you can immediately tell the sex of the chick. A male chick will have a white patch of feathers on his head. The females are all black.

I fully understand why most municipalities do not allow roosters within city limits. It's like having an alarm clock that goes off at all hours, for no apparent reason. So our beloved Hazel is now Brewster the Red Rooster.

The purpose of a rooster is to protect the flock with his life or to fill a stew pot (For the record, I couldn't do the latter)
